TWO very timely goals helped St Gerald’s College advance to the semi-finals of the Connacht Post Primary Schools A Championship at the expense of a St Colman’s team who are now out of the competition.

Green flags from Gavin Forry and Evan Walsh in either half helped steer Gerald’s to victory over an opposition with serious attacking firepower.

Former Mayo Minors Darragh Beirne and Niall Hurley got all but two of Colman’s scores.

However, the Claremorris school were firmly in contention even after letting Evan Walsh score soft goal in the 11th minute.

Lining out without former Mayo Minor captain Rio Mortimer and Dara Hurley, Colman’s dealt considerable damage through Beirne and Niall Hurley, enough to leave them 0-8 to 1-4 up at half-time.

Beirne opened the scoring 17 seconds into the second half before St Gerald’s stole a march on them with 1-6 in succession.

Five different players scored as the Castlebar school flew ahead, with Cian Walsh setting up Gavin Forry for their second goal with a sublime dummy.

St Gerald’s failed to score in the final quarter as Hurley and Beirne shot four without reply for Colman’s.

It made for a nervy finish, but wasn’t enough to save St Colman’s as St Gerald’s came out of the group while the proud Claremorris school will have to go at it again next year.

There will be a full report plus post match reaction from the St Gerald’s camp in Tuesday’s printe edition of The Mayo News.
