A SOLID 60-minute performance was the winning of this Mayo SFC first round game for a Kuba-Callaghan inspired Ballaghadereen in Claremorris on Saturday evening.

Claremorris’s inability to score from play in the last 20 minutes hurt them as a more cohesive and well-balanced Ballaghadereen edged their way to a three-point win to give manager Tomás Morley a perfect start to the group stages.

For long periods there was no telling which way this game was going to go.

The teams were level five times in a first half that see-sawed between two very evenly matched sides.

Adam Beirne, Mark Maloney and James Shaughnessy all posted scores for the hosts, who trailed by 0-5 to 0-7 at the break courtesy of two lovely scores from Kuba Callaghan and Dylan Feeney.

Claremorris kicked some of their best points in the second half, with Maloney and Beirne landing some nice scores which were answered by points from O’Callaghan – who finished with seven to his name.

Stephen Gill levelled the game for the sixth time with Claremorris’ last score as the homeside's play deteriorated despite the presence of former Mayo minors Paul Gilmore, Dara Hurley and Niall Hurley.

With the aforementioned Kuba Callaghan leading the charge, Ballagh’ turned up the heat and ground out the win over the next 20 minutes.
