Michael Walsh Intermediate League Final
Ballinrobe 3-9
Kilmeena 1-8
AN excellent second half performance from Ballinrobe secured their first silverware in ten years when they defeated Kilmeena in the Michael Walsh Intermediate final on Friday evening. Peter Ford’s men were worthy winners of the entertaining decider played in terrible weather conditions in front of a healthy crowd in Kilmeena.
The home side had the better of the first half with full-forward John McGlynn catching the eye with five of their six points. The other Kilmeena score arrived from Darragh Keaveney as they looked to move the ball quickly into attack.
Liam Burke was the bright spark for Ballinrobe in the opening half and they were just two adrift at the interval, 0-4 to 0-6.
The third quarter was all about Ballinrobe and the introduction of former Mayo minor captain Diarmuid Duffy had a major impact as Kilmeena found it hard to move the ball forward quickly.
Goals from Burke and John Enda Flannelly helped the guests to a seven-point lead and it would have been more but for a great save from Kilmeena ‘keeper Andrew Grealis.
Another Ballinrobe goal from Darren McDonnell sealed the deal six minutes from the end and although Liam Moore bundled in a late major for the hosts the cup was on its way to Flanagan Park.
