Three Mayo schools set to participate in STEM project showcase

STEMtacular powered by Analog Devices returns to Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim this February for two days of hands-on discovery, creativity and curiosity, welcoming primary school pupils from across the region to celebrate science, technology, engineering and maths in a fun, inclusive and inspiring way.

Taking place on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 of February from 10am to 2pm, STEMtacular powered by Analog Devices will once again turn Ballinamore into a buzzing centre of exploration, as pupils from second to sixth class take part in interactive exhibits, live performances and present their own student-led STEM projects.

Founded by Leitrim science teacher Louise Gallagher, STEMtacular powered by Analog Devices was created to help pupils see how science, technology, engineering and maths connect to the world around them, while building confidence, curiosity and a love of learning from an early age. What began as a local initiative has grown into a major regional celebration of STEM education.

This year, pupils from over 50 primary schools across Leitrim, Cavan, Roscommon, Sligo, Longford, Mayo, Westmeath, Monaghan, Donegal and Fermanagh will attend, bringing hundreds of children together for a shared learning experience. Mayo schools participating this year include Killasser NS Swinford, St Attracta’s NS Ballaghaderreen and Newport NS.

A central feature of the event is the Discovery Zone, a fun, fully hands-on exhibition space designed to spark curiosity and help pupils explore STEM in the world around them. Category sponsors Met Éireann and AbbVie are joined by a wide mix of exhibitors including engineers, environmental organisations, wildlife experts, universities and community groups, all encouraging children to explore, experiment and ask questions.

Throughout the Discovery Zone, pupils can present the weather, explore virtual-reality environments using VR headsets, get up close with real-life reptiles, investigate robotics and engineering challenges, and learn about biodiversity, sustainability and innovation. Every activity is designed to be interactive, ensuring children learn by doing and discovering how STEM shapes everyday life.

A major highlight of STEMtacular powered by Analog Devices is the student STEM project showcase, where pupils proudly present their own investigations and creations. Projects on display include: How can we help prevent an area from flooding and make the world better?

What do drinks do to our teeth? Threats to Bees and Silage Secrets – Nature's Fermentation Magic. These projects represent weeks of classroom inquiry and hands-on learning, giving pupils valuable opportunities to develop communication skills, confidence and pride in their achievements.

With exciting prizes on offer each day, including a class trip, the showcase also celebrates creativity and innovation across all participating schools. Beyond the exhibitions and project showcase, STEMtacular powered by Analog Devices also features a magical live performance from RTÉ’s Joe the Magician, while Mark the Science Guy will keep the energy high throughout the day as MC. A dedicated sensory area and additional supports are available to ensure every child can participate comfortably and fully enjoy the experience.
