Minister for Housing James Browne cuts the ribbon on a housing development in Mulranny
Mayo County Council has launched a housing focus information campaign as it advances construction on multiple social and affordable housing schemes throughout the county.
The local authority currently has construction underway at eight sites, including developments at Lois na Circa in Castlebar, Abbeyquarter in Ballyhaunis, four separate schemes in Ballinrobe, and two in Ballina. Additionally, an application for affordable housing funding has been submitted to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage for a Castlebar scheme.
The announcement follows the completion of several major developments in 2024, including a 50-unit scheme at Bog Gate Demesne in Westport, 16 units at Murrveagh Close in Mulranny, and an award-winning nine-home development in Carnacon.
Additional units were delivered at Cross West, Ballyvary, Church Manor Ballina, and Lower Charles Street in Castlebar before year-end.

Chief Executive Kevin Kelly emphasized the council's comprehensive approach to housing delivery.
"We are not just looking to build and deliver houses, we are looking to create sustainable communities, where families and individuals can thrive for generations to come," Kelly said. "Mayo County Council are motivated to deliver and exceed our targets in this area, to provide homes for all from young families seeking their first home, to our older citizens who are looking for age friendly solutions in later life."
Kelly highlighted the council's commitment to innovation and sustainability in design and construction, with a focus on creating developments connected to green spaces and amenities.
Beyond new construction, Mayo County Council provides extensive housing supports across the county. The council appointed a Gaeltacht Vacant Homes Coordinator in 2025 to revitalize underused properties in Gaeltacht areas through refurbishment and redevelopment.
As of December 2025, over 1,700 households were being supported through the council's Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) and Rental Accommodation Scheme (RAS) programmes. The Croí Conaithe Grant scheme has approved 696 applications, with 195 paid out to date.
Under the Defective Concrete Block Scheme, 434 applications have received Stage One approval and 270 have progressed to Stage Two, with 130 properties completed. The council also administers mobility aid grants, housing adaptation grants for people with disabilities, and housing aid for older people.
For those unable to secure commercial mortgage funding, Mayo County Council offers the Local Authority Home Loan and reconstruction home loans.
