A photo from this Friday morning (January 9) that has sparked huge online reactions.
A photo with three cars in the ditch on the same stretch of road in Mayo has gone viral online.
There were warnings of black ice and frost this warning but unfortunately, these cars ended up sideways.
Users online reacted strongly to this incident.
"Sheer abandonment of vehicles, ye can’t be doing that lads!" humorously commented a user online.
"Looks like a rally stage" states another one.
"It was freezing last night when I was going to work roads are a disaster" one user acknowledged, while someone else asked the question: "Where are the gritters?"
One person resorted to a bit of sarcasm: "Gritters ?what are these (things) as rare as hens teeth down in the Erris area but we live in hope."
"There must be something good in that drain...." speculated one comment, while another one suggested "they're just tired".
A user claimed "The side roads were very bad in places but the main road wasn’t gritted", a notion that can't be verified.
Some might have had a lucky escape themselves, as one person commented "Omg I know I was lucky this morning. I didn’t realise it was as bad as it was."
And it doesn't seem like driving conditions will improve by much in the meantime, as Mayo County Council have announced:
"A Status Yellow Wind Warning has been issued for Mayo and will be in effect from 4pm on Sunday January 11th to 10pm later on Sunday. Strong and gusty winds mayo cause wave overtopping, fallen trees and debris, displaced loos objects and difficult travelling conditions. "
The authorities also inform the public, that "with road temperatures remaining low, our gritting teams will be out this evening (January 9th) and tomorrow morning (January 10th). Please exercise caution if making a journey on roads."
