A touching community initiative has taken another major step forward with the installation of two more public access Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) along the Great Western Greenway in memory of the late John 'Zulu' Moore, who sadly passed away in January 2023.

Led by Zulu’s wife Nora, daughter Patricia, and extended family, the project has been raising funds to install lifesaving AEDs along the popular cycling and walking trail between Westport and Newport. The initiative aims to make emergency equipment accessible to the public in case of cardiac emergencies on the trail.

The third and fourth AEDs in this growing network are now live and ready for use if needed. The third is located at the entrance of John Malee’s premises (Eircode: F28 W9T3), and the fourth has been installed just off the Greenway in Acres Grove, Newport (Eircode: F28 X577).

These new installations join two previously placed AEDs at Midwest Furniture, Westport (Eircode: F28 VW64) and Michael McLoughlin’s, Newport (Eircode: F28 FW77), which went live on April 21.

“We are delighted to be involved in this fantastic initiative,” said the Westport Community First Responders. “Zulu was a deeply loved figure in the community, and we’re proud to honour his memory in a way that could help save lives.”

The team behind the initiative is now seeking additional locations to expand the network of AEDs along the Greenway. Residents or property owners from Westport to Newport who are interested in hosting an AED are encouraged to contact the organisers through their social media page.

Special thanks were extended to all who have supported the project so far, particularly local landowners for their cooperation in making the installations possible.

This initiative not only serves as a lasting tribute to Zulu, but also significantly enhances safety for everyone who enjoys the Great Western Greenway.
