Actor/Director Sheila Moylette on the set of 'Our Father'.
Western Front Studios is delighted to announce the completion of principal photography for 'Our Father', a captivating short film written and directed by the multi-talented Sheila Moylette. This exciting project was commissioned under Screen Ireland’s 'Actor as Creator' scheme, a highly acclaimed scheme in partnership leading Irish Film School, Bow Street Academy.
Set in the 1960s, Our Father is a poignant and gripping tale that delves into themes of faith, family, and the secrets we keep. Against the backdrop of a small Irish village, the story follows the arrival of a young priest called to an eerie household on a fateful night, uncovering layered mysteries that challenge his convictions.
“Ireland is known for its rich culture in storytelling, so I’m thrilled to tell this story at home in Mayo with a brilliant local production company and beautiful rural location,” shares Sheila Moylette, who is a native of Islandeady.
Sheila, known for her role in RTE’s hit TV series 'Can’t Cope, Won’t Cope' and the hugely popular sequence of Mace adverts starring rugby legend Johnny Sexton, has not only written and directed the film but also stars as Catherine Mason, delivering a moving performance at the heart of this evocative story.
The film’s exceptional cast includes: Fionn Ó Loingsigh (Cardboard Gangsters, Bad Sisters) as Fr Daniel Maloney Geraldine McAlinden (The Secret Scripture, Verdigris) as Kitty O’Grady. Catherine Canny and baby Daire Sweeney, who make their memorable on-screen debuts as Agatha Clarke and Baby Toby, respectively.
Filmed on location at the historic Adare House in Newport, the production was made possible through the incredible hospitality of Fania Ellison and her family. The beautifully preserved period setting played a key role in bringing the story’s 1960s atmosphere to life.
The film was brought to screen by Westport-based cinematographer Brian Durcan, whose stunning visuals have graced an impressive eight short films this year, including two shot in Westport. Brian shared his excitement, stating: “I’m delighted Our Father was the one to close such an incredible year of creative achievement.”
Key contributors
Key contributors to the production include Producer Dorothy Whittaker, a Film and Photography student at Mayo College of Further Education, marking her debut producing credit with this short film; Director Lorna Fitzsimons, who provided vital support to Sheila throughout the shoot; and Croia McDermott, a powerhouse in preproduction and an invaluable support to Sheila across all aspects of the project.
“Sheila Moylette’s creativity and vision made this project truly special,” shared Emer Durcan of Western Front Studios. “The camaraderie on set was phenomenal, and Sheila’s ability to balance acting and directing with such finesse is a testament to her extraordinary talent. We couldn’t be prouder of this film and the team behind it.”
As Our Father heads into post-production at Element Post Production in Dublin, excitement builds for its submission to the Galway Film Fleadh, where it is hoped to premiere in July 2025.
Local audiences can also look forward to a special screening in Westport following its festival debut. Stay tuned to Western Front Studios’ and Virgo Novena social media channels for updates and announcements.
