THE official turning on of the Christmas lights in Westport may have been delayed due to poor weather - but that didn’t stop one of the town’s most popular attractions from lighting up in the midst of an incoming storm.

The Paddington Bear statue on The Fairgreen was illuminated by lights hung around the statue as Storm Darragh prepares to batter the west coast.

Local county councillor Peter Flynn had called for Paddington to be lit up to maximise its visibility during the winter months.

Thousands of people from near and far have flocked to see the Paddington statue since it was officially unveiled in October as part of the ‘Paddington Visits’ campaign to promote the new Paddington Bear film.

At one point, it became a victim of its own success when it was temporarily closed to necessitate repairs to the nearby surface after it was trampled by the volume of visitors to the area.

The Westport statue is the only one of its kind located in Ireland.
