The annual Portwest welly throwing competition is back at the National Ploughing Championships.

Over the last eleven years, Portwest have been delighted to support a number of charities at the event which takes place at the Co Laois event.

Once again, Westport based Portwest is partnering with renowned wellington brand, Dunlop, who Portwest distributes nationwide.

After last year's huge success, the Welly throws in 2024 will be run for the second year in support of Suicide awareness and support Charity – SOSAD.

Welly Throwing Invite

SOSAD work tirelessly in our communities offering support and services for people who are struggling with suicidal ideation, self-harming, depression, bereavement, stress and anxiety. Donations to the charity are down this year, making it very difficult to provide free counselling and support to so many people in desperate need of help.

Thousands of people including some well-known Irish celebrities have thrown wellies since the launch of the event at the National Ploughing championships over eleven years ago, and this year will be no different.

Martin Foran, National Sales manager at Portwest said the company is ‘thrilled’ to participate in the Welly Throw.

“This thoroughly enjoyable event has been a wonderful partnership for over eleven years, raising essential funds and increasing awareness for charities across the country, and we are delighted to be involved with SOSAD again this year,” he added.

Christy Bannon from So Sad commented: ‘’There is nothing I love more than having a bit of craic and entertaining people, while raising money for a worthy cause. I am certainly looking forward to the Ploughing again with Portwest, and waving wellies with wild abandon."

The event is taking place today at row 20, block 6, stand 465 at the National Ploughing Championships.
