Deirdre Cunningham, Tomás Mac Conmara, Austin Vaughan and Tom Gilligan at the launch of Audit of Oral Heritage Collections for Mayo
The search for voice recordings of Mayo’s past will be discussed at an event during Heritage Week which begins this Saturday, August 17 until next Sunday, August 25.
Since June, a major project led by Mayo Heritage Office of Mayo County Council has been covering the county in a bid to find stories, memories and folklore of County Mayo, recorded on tape cassettes, reel to reels, or in digital form.
The Audit of Oral Heritage Recordings in the county will be the subject of a free lecture in Castlebar Library next Monday, August 19, delivered by Dr Tomás Mac Conmara. An oral historian and author himself, Dr Mac Conmara is Director of Mac Conmara Heritage.
Mac Conmara Heritage is the company charged with working with community groups, historians, and collectors to create, for the first time, a comprehensive list of oral heritage recordings made to preserve the stories and memories of Mayo’s past.
The event is part of Mayo Heritage Office’s contribution to National Heritage Week and will begin at Mayo Library Headquarters, Castlebar at 7.30pm.
If you have any information on oral heritage recordings or collections on county Mayo topics, people or places, please contact Mac Conmara Heritage Consulting on 087 916073 or macconmaraheritage@gmail.com.
