LOTTO fever hit Westport this morning with speculation that a syndicate in a local company scooped a cool €1 million.
The winning Lotto Plus 1 ticket was bought in Hoban’s Centra on the Fairgreen in Westport, and it is widely believed that the tickets was bought by a 15-person syndicate from the Carraig Donn Head Office on the Lodge Road in Westport.
There were great celebrations among the staff of Hoban’s Centra when they learned the news that they had sold a ticket worth €1 million.
Mark Walsh, manager of the store, told The Mayo News that ‘news travels so fast in Westport’ that he was told the shop had sold a winning ticket before he was officially notified by the National Lottery.
“We open at 6am and we had a man in here early enough who told me that we had a Lotto win over the weekend. I told him I did not hear anything about it and asked him if he was sure. He replied we had, because his wife was part of the syndicate. Sure enough, we got a call from the National Lottery at around five past nine to inform us that we had sold a winning ticket for Lotto Plus 1,” he explained.
The winning numbers of Saturday night’s Lotto Plus 1 draw were: 2, 6, 11, 24, 26, 31 and the bonus ball was 7. There was one winner of the €1 million jackpot.
Hoban’s Centra has been located on The Fairgreen in Westport since 2015. This is the first time that the shop has sold a winning ticket.
“There has been great excitement since we got the news, and there has been a great buzz around the shop all day,” Mr Walsh explained.
“We have been noticeably busier today, with a lot of people coming in and asking if we had sold the winning ticket. It has been the talk of the town all day. This is the first time this shop has sold a winning ticket, and it is an amazing feeling,” he added.
