Maam and Knock mourn passing of Garda Terry Keenan

The late Tony Keenan.

THE death has taken place in Galway Hospital following a short illness of Terry Keenan, Maam, Co Galway, and formerly of Knock, Mayo. He was a retired member of An Garda Síochána.

Terry (69) spent almost all his life as a guard in the Maam area where he was such a popular favourite. It was often noted that, for many years, Terry was the only guard on duty between Cong and Clifden.

He had a great love for the people of the Maam region including Corr na Mona, Clonbur, Cloughbrack, Finney and Maam Cross and over to Cong.

He had an abiding interest and love for football and hurling and also enjoyed many days on the golf courses from Ballyconneely to Ballinrobe and Claremorris.

After his retirement a few years ago, Terry and Barbara moved to his home village of Knock while the family members still maintained the family home in Maam.

The news of his passing came as a big shock to his legion of friends. He will be greatly missed by his family and so many people in the Connemara region as well as in his home parish of Knock.

Reposing takes place in Maam Valley Community Centre this evening, Tuesday, from 5pm to 8pm. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 noon tomorrow (Wednesday) in The Church of the Nativity, Kilmilkin, and will be followed by interment in Brennane Cemetery, Maam.

Terry will be greatly missed by his wife Barbara and their family, Linda, Terry and Tara, daughter-in-law Michelle, sons-in-law Stephen and Enda, grandchildren Sarai and Éanna, brothers Tommy (Knock) and PJ (London), sisters Breege (Dublin) and Mary Carey (Claremorris), brother-in-law Laurence, sister-in-law Patricia, nephews, relatives, extended family, friends and neighbours.
