Swinford fire claims the lives of two people overnight

GARDAÍ in Swinford are currently investigating a house fire close to the east Mayo town which claimed the lives of a local couple overnight.

The blaze which occurred in a two-storey family home at Deerpark on the Kilkelly Road outside Swinford was reported to the emergency services in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The house was extensively damaged by the time the local fire services brought the blaze under control. Two bodies were then discovered in the house.

The scene has been preserved by An Garda Síochána and the Garda scenes of crimes investigators are currently at the location to determine the cause of the fire. The discovery of the two bodies were also reported to the local coroner for investigation. It is understood they were the only people in the house at the time of the blaze.

It is understood the two victims were a well known couple who ran a business in Swinford and the fire has left the close-knit community in shock.
