‘Outpouring of grief’ in Ballina following passing of male pedestrian

THERE is and outpouring of grief in Ballina today following the passing of a local man who died from injuries sustained during a collision involving a car.

The 33-year-old, who was well known in the locality, was pronounced dead at Mayo University Hospital yesterday evening (Wednesday). 

A young girl who was also involved in the collision was treated for non-threatening injuries and has since been discharged. 

The collision occurred while the man and the girl were crossing Lord Edward Street. 

Local county councillor Mark Duffy told The Mayo News that the tragedy had evoked ‘an outpouring of grief’ in Ballina. 

Cllr Duffy also paid tribute to the local community who rallied to help the man following the incident. 

“There is a cloud of sadness over Ballina at the moment with news of his passing our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. It’s incredibly sad.”

The road where the incident occurred has since been reopened following the examinations by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

The local Coroner has been informed, and arrangements are being made for a post-mortem examination. 

Gardaí are renewing their appeal for witnesses to the collision to come forward. Those with camera footage (including dash-cam) from the area at the time are urged to provide it to Gardaí.
