The award group is showing free films over the coming weeks
The European Parliament Liaison Office is partnering with W Cinema, Westport, and Club Scannán Sailearna to present free showings of films shortlisted for the 2024 LUX Audience Award.
The LUX Audience Award aims to strengthen ties between politics and the people by inviting European audiences to become active protagonists and rate their favourite films in order to help determine the winner.
The films are being screened, subtitled, and rated by audiences throughout the EU.
The screening of ‘20,000 Species of Bees’ in Club Scannán Sailearna will feature subtitles in as gaeilge.
Chris MacManus, MEP for Midlands-North-West said he’s ‘delighted LUX film screenings will be taking place in Westport’.
All five shortlisted films are critically acclaimed and have each been highly acknowledged at numerous film festivals around the world.
An integral part of these screenings is audience voting, in which they will rate the LUX Audience Award films: five stars ‘excellent’ to one star ‘poor’.
The rating platform is now open, and the final ranking will be determined by combining the public score and the score from the Members of the European Parliament.
Voting is open until April 14 and the winning film will be announced in a ceremony at the European Parliament in Brussels on April 16.
The screenings represent an excellent opportunity to watch some of the most acclaimed European films of the past year, locally!
The films will be of particular interest to those interested in international films and languages.
Mr MacManus called the awards ‘a fantastic opportunity to showcase the best of European cinema to a wider audience and I commend the organisers who are bringing these screenings to Westport’ and other areas.
