Belmullet Library launched its new Age Friendly car parking spaces in Belmullet

In a significant step towards community inclusivity in Mayo, Belmullet Library has proudly introduced Age-Friendly parking spaces on St Brigid's Day.

Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Michael Loftus joined Belmullet-based councillor Seán Carey, Cathaoirleach of the Westport/Belmullet Municipal District and local librarian Fionnuala McGinty at the Belmullet Civic Offices to launch the new initiative.

The two age friendly car spaces are located close to the entrance of the civic offices which houses offices of Mayo County Council, Údaras na Gaeltachta, the Áras Inis Gluaire arts centre as well as Belmullet library.

The new initiative will help to address the mobility challenges faced by older community members and ensures universal accessibility to library resources.

The launch was also attended by Kate Healy of the Mayo Library Service and Maura Murphy Mayo County Council's Age friendly Ambassador. The momentous occasion showcased the newly designated parking spaces that complement the library's commitment to fostering an inclusive environment. The project, which gained Age-Friendly status last year, also features improved lighting, reading glasses provisions, and accessible shelving.
Local area engineers Martin O’Grady and Barry Ryan from Mayo County Council played a crucial role in bringing the initiative to fruition. The library, now a beacon of community connection, continues to evolve as a space that caters to the diverse needs of its community.
The launch was not only a successful implementation of Age-Friendly parking but also a celebration of the ongoing efforts of Belmullet Library in creating an environment where everyone, regardless of age or mobility, can comfortably engage in learning and social activities.
