Castlebar Samaritans, the latest addition to the Samaritan network was officially launched by Jonathan Neville, Regional Director of Samaritans Ireland in Castlebar in late August.

The establishment of the centre has been supported by Galway Samaritans, in particular Anne Wynne, former Director of Galway Samaritans and current Director, Catherine Emerson, who have led a team that recruited and trained the first volunteers in Castlebar. Castlebar Samaritans hope that more people from Mayo will now be able to join them in their work.

Castlebar Samaritans is based at 21 Upper Thomas Street and 17 volunteers have been taking calls there since May. So far Castlebar volunteers have taken almost 1500 calls, supported people through email and will shortly be rolling out face-to-face conversations.

Catherine Emerson, Director of Galway Samaritans says: “Already volunteers in Castlebar are having a significant impact, ensuring that we are available to people who need us. As our numbers grow, Mayo volunteers will be there when our lines are busiest.

“Castlebar Samaritans understand the value of talking and the power of human connection. Just talking to another person can help someone to stop, breathe and start to see a way through their problems. If you’re going through a tough time, you don't have to face it alone.”

No-one in Castlebar Samaritans is paid and all the hard work in establishing and running the centre was undertaken by volunteers from Castlebar and Galway Samaritans. If you feel you can spare a few hours a week to be a listening or a support volunteer please email recruitment@galwaysamaritans.ie and they will get back to you with more information.

Talk to them for free, 24/7, 365 days a year, on 116 123, email jo@samaritans.ie or visit www.samaritans.org/ireland/branches/galway/
