With many people gearing up for the mini marathon, incidences of athletes foot (Tinea pedis) are on the rise. Whether you’re running, jogging or crawling the 10k, the last thing you want to be bothered with is and itchy burning sensation between your toes. Let’s have a closer look and see how the condition can be tackled.
Athlete’s Foot caused by fungi that live on the upper layer of the skin and thrive in the humid conditions of the feet. It is contagious, and can be easily picked up in changing-room environments, such as those at swimming pools. Once acquired, it is very persistent. People with naturally sweaty feet are most prone.
Athlete’s Foot can also prove a particular problem for those with poor circulation of the feet.  The body’s defenses try to eradicate the fungi by shedding surface skin cells as fast as possible. The problem can be exacerbated when the fungal growth is faster than the rate of the skin cell fall.

Natural solutions
Without treatment, this condition can worsen to blistering and bleeding. Bacterial infection can ensue, along with an unpleasant odour and even crumbling toenails. Happily, there are natural solutions available to combat this condition. Sufferers may opt to explore these alternative remedies, dietary changes, supplementation programmes and lifestyle options.  
Tea tree oil can be used to relieve odour, itching, scaling and burning sensation. Peppermint oil can relieve pain and have a cooling effect. Echinacea, marigold and myrrh oil can be used on affected areas as often as required to relieve discomfort.
With regards to supplementation, extra vitamin C and zinc can aid the immune system and help fight infection. Acidophilus tablets can help restore natural bacteria in the body to fight the fungi. Vitamin B12 can be taken to reduce redness. However, always consult a professional when seeking supplementation.
Applying a little natural live yoghurt to the area each day can also help, as the yoghurt has natural anti-fungal properties.
As with most conditions affecting skin health, a balanced diet full of fruit, vegetables and healthy oils is vital. Citrus fruits and green vegetables washed down with plenty of water can give our immune systems a boost and eradicate toxins. Garlic cleanses the blood and improves circulation.
