Man killed in Charlestown accident named

The man killed in a road collision in Charlestown on St Patrick’s Day has been named.
Peter Rushe, a 67-year-old man from Barnacahoge, Swinford was killed in a two car collision at about 10.45pm on St Patrick’s night.
The accident occurred at Barrack Street in the town, which has been reopened as of yesterday evening.
Mr Rushe, who was driving one of the cars, received serious injuries in the collision and was taken to Mayo General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Gardai in Charlestown are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them at 094-9254104.


Ballina and Westport set to suffer from taxi strike

Mayo towns Ballina and Westport are expected to be two of the towns who will face severe disruption from Monday next as taxi drivers plan to withdraw services for at least 24 hours.
The protest is part of action by the Irish Taxi Council who claim the series of protests will continue indefinitely until a cap is put on the number of taxi licenses being issued.
Ballina and Westport were among those towns impacted by a three hour work stoppage yesterday (Thursday).


All-Ireland glory for Ballina girls

There were great scenes of celebration in Ballina on last night (Thursday) after St Mary’s Secondary School won their first ever national soccer title at Flancare Park, Longford. Goals from Alanna Naughton and Sarah Rowe helped the Junior (U-16) team to a 2-1 win over Moville Community College, Donegal.
