Family relieved as Castlebar nun survives Chile earthquake

The family of Mayo native, Sister Mary T McDonagh, were relieved when they received a phone call on Sunday evening from her informing them that she was safe after last week’s earthquake in Chile struck in the heart of the region where she is based.
Sister Mary T, a native of Errew, Castlebar is based in the village of Comuna de Fagrada Familia in the region of Maule and while she was unharmed in the quake, which measured 8.8 on the Richter Scale, the medical centre in the village which she works was razed to the ground.


O’Mahony releases statement after weekend car accident

Mayo Fine Gael TD, John O’Mahony has today released a statement thanking everyone who contacted his office, by phone and text, enquiring and wishing him well following a car accident he had last Saturday. The accident took place at 7pm just outside Swinford while the Deputy was on constituency work. Deputy O’Mahony, speaking from his constituency office  in Claremorris, said that while he was shaken, he is now feeling fine.


Harty joins Cheltenham preview night team

Top trainer Eddie Harty has been confirmed as the latest special guest for The Mayo News Cheltenham preview night. The event, which is sponsored by Paddy Power bookmakers, will take place in Westport next Tuesday, March 9, and will include some of the biggest names in racing.
