Billy helps name the team
People and places Michael Commins
TWO weeks ago, we published a photo on this page, lent to us by Owen Brennan from Claremorris, and dated 1952. A number of readers contacted me in relation to the photo, each able to name a few of the players. However, Billy Murphy from Castlebar came as near as almost possible to naming the entire team. He even went further by recalling that it was a team comprised of some Castlebar Mitchels players and some from the St Mary’s Hospital team who came together to play another team in an Open Day tournament at the St Mary’s grounds. “The photo certainly brought back a lot of memories for me. It took some time to identify them all but I think I have them all right except for one lad who was a member of the staff in Irwins at the time. I cannot recall his name,” says Billy. Thanks to Billy Murphy and to the other people who contacted us in relation to this nostalgic photo from 1952.
