Country Roads Country singer Mick Flavin presided at the launch of the new Music Library in Castlebar.
Mick Flavin comes to Castlebar
Michael Commins
COUNTRY singer Mick Flavin presided at the launch of the new Music Library at Mayo County Library in Castlebar last Monday night week. It was a pleasant and homely gathering with the informal nature of the evening lending further appeal to the occasion. County Librarian, Austin Vaughan, had a warm welcome for all who came along to the ceremony and said they were very pleased to provide this new facility to the public. A nice selection of all kinds of music is now available in the Library with a good emphasis on local artists as well. Anyone seeking further information in relation to the Music Library can contact the staff at the County Library while some details will also be available at www.mayolibrary.ie It was my pleasant duty to introduce Mick Flavin and also to preside at the launch of his booklet to mark 20 years in country music. This was compiled by Audrey Healy from Rooskey, Co Roscommon. He was joined by Michael Fox from Callow, who sang two numbers, as did Liz McHale from Castlebar. A nice contingent of Mick Flavin supporters made the journey to Castlebar for the event including Pat and Maura Murphy (Ballyhaunis), Michael and Margaret O’Hehir (Clogher, Westport), Kathleen Mulligan and Ann Kennedy (Charlestown), Ann Mitchell (Castlebar and Kilkerrin), Mai Lyons, Mai McNeill, Ann McNamara and Marilyn Heaney (Achill), Bernie Ryan and Chris Carney (Knock), Anna and Pete (Kilkelly), while Colman, Mary and Henry Cloran journeyed all the way from Ardrahan in Galway for the night. Also enjoying the launch ceremonies were Castlebar councillor, Johnny Mee, John and Mary Loftus (Castlebar), Pat Conway and Noeleen from down Turlough way, Teresa Quinn (Breaffy)and Bernie (Lally) Walsh (Castlebar), Eamon Staunton (Islandeady), Maura Walsh and friends from Ballintubber, Liz McHale (Castlebar), Michael and Bridget Fox (Callow), and Noel Byrne from CRC who was busy recording proceedings. Mary Flavin was down from Longford for the night. Brian and Mairéad Thompson, close friends of the Flavin family, also made the trip from Longford. A special word of thanks to the Library staff of Austin Vaughan, Paula Leavy-McCarthy, Noreen Hoban, Mary Murphy, Mary Gannon, Alan King, Ann Coyne and Pat Ryan for all their help.
