If like many of us you’ve eaten and drunk a little too much over Christmas and the New Year then now would be a good time to start clearing out the clutter with a good detox.
A would ordinarily be for apple but when it comes to detox, it is most definitely for artichoke. A powerful liver herb, not to mention a culinary delight, Artichoke is high in caffeoylquinic and chlorogenic acids, two powerful compounds renowned for their choleretic and diuretic properties.
B is for another classic cleansing plant, burdock. Burdock root contains arctiopicrin, a powerful bitter agent known to increase the release of bile from the liver. As with dandelion, this activity will aid in the removal of fat soluble toxins from the body via the bowel.
Another firm favourite is cleavers. Also known as ‘goose grass’, cleavers has been used for centuries as a cleansing agent. It is very high in a group of compounds called coumarins. Coumarins fill the air with that fresh grass smell when it’s being mown; they also have a wonderful effect on the lymphatic system helping to speed up the rate at which waste products are removed via the kidney.
And finally, D is for dandelion root and leaf. Dandelion is of course one of the most widely used ‘cleansing’ herbs in the world. It is a bitter herb and as such, its bitter taste helps to stimulate enzymes within the stomach and the liver, helping them to process and remove waste products. Dandelion leaf, quite deservedly, has the reputation as ‘king of the natural diuretics’!
Look out for a supplement that contains all four detox plants.
If constipation is a problem psyllium husks and seeds can help. High in fibre, they act as a gentle natural laxative, helping to attract and absorb toxins. Seeds should be soaked in water before using.
Linseed and rice bran can also help to get things moving again but make sure you drink plenty of fluids, between 1.5 and 2 litres of fresh water daily to help flush toxins through.
You may also want to consider taking a probiotic supplement to help support overall digestive health and speed up the elimination process. Choose a probiotic with the prebiotic FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides) for extra support.
Finally, a good multi-vit to ensure you’re not missing out on any essential nutrients is also recommended. If you have liver or kidney complaints, or are in any doubt as to the state of your health, consult your GP before embarking on your detox.
