BEAUTY The best mascaras

Maggie Gibbons looks at which mascaras you should buy to make the most your eyelashes
Flutter those lashes…

Maggie Gibbons

I’m constantly being asked for advice on the best mascara to buy either in a chemist or supermarket. We all love something that makes the lashes look long and luscious, and we all hate clumping. If eyes are the windows to the soul, then surely the frame matters!
I’m going to give you the lowdown on some favourites. Remember though, if you have sensitive eyes, you will need to buy a mascara specifically for this. No point in having long lashes but tears streaming down your face…

Lancôme Definicils
This iconic award-winning mascara provides lavishly long, perfectly defined lashes, It has a uniquely shaped applicator to give you just the right amount every time. Costing €25.50, it is available at Goldens chemist, Westport, and Quinns chemist, Castlebar.

Yves Saint Laurent - Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils
My own particular favourite. I noticed how it enhanced a friend’s lashes some years ago, and it’s now my ‘holy grail’ mascara. It’s wonderfully lash lengthening with not a clump in sight. It retails at around €25.

L’Oreal Voluminous
The L’Oreal Voluminous applicator brush is hailed by reviewers as effective and easy to use; its separated bristles coat and lengthen each individual lash. Costing a reasonable €12.34, it is available at Stauntons Chemist, Castlebar.

Maybelline Express Volume
Now we’re getting into the budget mascara. Maybelline products present fantastic value for your euro. Most self-respecting make up artists carry one of these. Allegedly the best waterproof mascara on the market, and reputed to be the best-selling waterproof mascara ever created. It wont clump; it volumises and lasts ages. It is available at Boots €9.99, reduced from €12.99.
