Mick O’Dwyer bookies favourite for Mayo manager; Fire claims life of Kilmaine man; Mother and child unharmed in Westport accident
Micko’s installed as bookies favourite for Mayo manager’s job
Mayo GAA County Board Chairman, James Waldron, today revealed that five people have been nominated to the board for the vacant position of Mayo Senior Football manager - but bookmaker Paddy Power feels it is a one horse race at the moment. Veteran manager Mick O’Dwyer has been installed as 8/11 favourite to take over from John O’Mahony, with former two time Mayo manager, John Maughan second favourite at 9/4. Two time All-Star and current Ballintubber senior football manager James Horan has been installed at 9/2, with the experienced Denis Kearney from Charlestown next best at 5/1. Former Mayo defender Anthony McGarry is the outsider at 12/1.
Elderly Kilmaine man dies in fire at his south Mayo home
A 79-year-old old man has died from injuries sustained at his home in Gortnagor, three miles from Kilmaine. The emergency services were called to the man’s home at 8.30pm yesterday evening and the man’s body was removed to Mayo General Hospital for a post mortem. The man’s name has not yet been released but Gardaí are not treating his death as suspicious.
Mother and child unharmed after tree falls on car in Westport
A Westport mother and child had a lucky escape this morning when a tree fell on their car close to the Railway Bridge on the Ballinrobe Road side of the town. The incident occurred shortly before 9am. Diversions were put in place while the tree was removed but the road is now open again to traffic.
