Cllr Burke said people are frustrated

Councillor Cyril Burke has said communication masts in Castlebar are causing frustration.

The Fine Gael councillor has brought the issue up on numerous occasions, but brought it to light again at a municipal district meeting this week.

“Lots of people are frustrated that planning permission was granted for these masts, and I think it was Eircom that applied for them,” he said.

Cllr Burke continued to say he doesn’t know if Eircom are ‘putting up the dishes’, or ‘whoever is putting up the gear on them to facilitate all the different mobile operators’, but ‘nobody’s phone coverage has improved’.

“They are in place now for over a year in some instances, so lots of people are frustrated about it,” he concluded.

Head of Castlebar Municipal District, David Mellett explained that the council’s broadband officer had written to the provider but received no response.

Mr Mellett said this ‘has been followed up’ and will continue to be followed up until resolved.
