Paul Lawless calls for ‘urgent action’ at Claremorris junction

The Aontú local election candidate has appealed to Mayo County Council to rectify the situation

Local Election candidate Paul Lawless has expressed his concern on road safety at the crossroad junction on the Knock Road, Claremorris, and has called for immediate action.

The junction is the crossroads linking Knock road and Claremount manor.

The Aontú representative called the junction ‘the most dangerous stretch of road within the area’, and acknowledged the several ‘crashes and near misses’ over the past few years.

Just last week, a wall was damaged as a result of an accident.

Locals explained to Mr Lawless that a car crossing the Knock Road from the N17, failed to stop and was struck by a car driving from Claremorris to Knock.

“There is a major issue with cars crossing the old Knock road and failing to stop, heightening the risk to other cars and pedestrians in the locality” he added.

The traffic around the junction has seen a ‘significant increase’ due to ‘Google Maps and other GPS systems directing motorists’ via the road.

“Strangers to the area travelling from the North are taking a right off the N17 and travelling across the bog road. These motorists in many cases do not realise they are approaching a crossroads and must stop” said Mr Lawless.

The Mayo politician has appealed to Mayo County Council to ‘rectify the situation’, and has also ‘contacted Google Maps requesting the company direct traffic through an alternative route’.

“In the meantime, I am appealing to the local motorists to exercise extreme caution while approaching this junction” he concluded.
