Learn to write your local and family history

Remember the good old days? Ever compare notes with a family member? Or argue with a neighbour down the pub over what happened that time? But who has the right version of the ‘way things were’? Why not put yours in print?
Ballyglass author Martin Keaveney is inviting would-be local writers and historians to come together for an enjoyable day of writing and local memories as part of Heritage Week 2019. This special creative nonfiction-writing workshop takes place this Saturday, August 24, in the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar. There will be expert guidance available on the craft of writing as well as guidance on routes toward publishing your project.
Writers are welcome to bring their notes, photos, newspaper cuttings, tapes and other memorabilia for inspiration and discussion with other writer-historians. No experience is necessary. Material may also be sent in advance.  
Martin Keaveney’s debut collection of short stories, ‘The Rainy Day’, was launched last February. His fiction has previously appeared in literary journals in Ireland, the UK and the US. He is currently completing a PhD at NUIG in Creative Writing and Textual Studies, while also working as a creative-writing lecturer and consultant. In 2016 and 2018, respectively, he was awarded the SparΡnacht Uí Eithir (a bursary created in memory of Irish writer and broadcaster BreandΡn Ó hEithir) and the NUIG Write-Up Bursary for his research.
