THE infamous Mayo GAA curse of 1951 forms the backbone to a new short film being shown in the Galway Film Fleadh.
‘An Mhallacht’ won the Grand Prix award recently at the Oddalenia Dublin Film Festival and has been chosen as an official selection at the upcoming Galway Film Fleadh in July.
It has also been selected for the Sleeping Giants and Underground Cinema film festivals later in the summer. The film, which is a dark comedy, is in Irish with English subtitles. It revolves around two brothers and how the Mayo GAA curse of 1951 affects their daily lives, pushing them to the point where they go against all they believe to be true.
The cast includes TV and film actors such as Seamus Hughes, Marcus Lamb, Peadar Ó Treasaigh, Peadar Cox, Yvonne Ní Laife (Clonbur) and Aindrias De Staic (Shrule).
It was filmed on location in the west of Ireland, and the script was written by Antoin Beag Ó Colla, who has written for TV’s ‘Red Rock’, Des Bishop’s ‘This is Ireland’ and multi-award- winning short film ‘Rúbaí’.
Directed by Cóilín Ó Scólaí, with Colm Hogan as Director of Photography, the film’s score was produced by SeΡn Reynolds, with John Talbot of Panic Post Production on grade and special effects.
The short was produced by James Ryan of StationHouse Media and received funding from the Dingle International Film Festival through their Físín Award.
‘An Mhallacht’ premiered at this year’s Dingle International Film Festival in Kerry, opening for Jim Sheridan’s new film ‘The Secret Scripture’.
Details of all future screenings and events can be found at the AnMhallacht Facebook page.
