Garrymore Drama Group stages ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’
Garrymore Drama Group will present Brian Friel’s classic ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’ at The Linenhall on March 21. The production is directed by Frankie Ralph O’Malley. Since its premiere production at the Abbey in 1990, Brian Friel’s ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’ has rapidly established itself as a modern classic in both Irish and international theatre. Set in 1936 in Ballybeg, Co Donegal, at the home of the five unmarried Mundy sisters and their brother Jack, a priest recently returned from 25 years in an African leper colony, this memory play unfolds from the point of view of adult narrator Michael, then eight years old, the illegitimate son of the youngest sister. Michael’s memories of that fateful time, centred round the festival of the Celtic god Lugh, bring into sharp focus images of love, loss, and moments of intense emotion in a play of layered meanings, conflicting rituals and family tensions. Garrymore Drama Group has been in existence since the early 1980s and is well-established with many successful productions and two All-Ireland Confined titles to its credit.
Garrymore Drama Group presents ‘Dancing at Lughnasa’ at The Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, on Thursday, March 21, at 8pm. To book, call 094 9023733.
