A special concert is being held in Westport on March 15, to raise for a host of community groups in the town
Westport hosts Community Unity Concert
In these difficult days, community plays a hugely important role in society. With cutbacks affecting all kinds of services, from health care to youth services, community groups are doing all they can not only to lessen the impact of these cutbacks, but also to survive and thrive. With this in mind, a special concert is being held in Westport this Thursday, March 15, to raise awareness of and funds for community groups in the town. The Community Unity Concert, at 8pm in The Wyatt Hotel, The Octagon, will feature a host of musicians, including internationally acclaimed harpist Laoise Kelly (accompanied by Michelle O’ Brien), John Hoban and friends, Charlie Cusack and What the Folk. MC on the night will be Len Jones, guitar player with the band Love Affair, whose hits included ‘Everlasting Love’ and ‘Bringing on Back the Good Times.’ Local groups representing all aspects of community and all perspectives, from youth to age, will also give visual presentations on what exactly they do, and the importance of connection at all levels. Members of Meitheal na Mart, one of the main Westport youth clubs, WRFM 98.2 local radio, Westport Arts Festival committee and other groups will be present on the night. Weather permitting, the Clew Bay Pipe Band and youth drumming group Snakes will begin the proceedings with performances on the Octagon. The gig, which is being held in conjunction with the Westport Fuel Appeal for the Elderly, is being recorded and filmed, with a view to producing a Christmas DVD. Admission, €5 per person, includes a raffle ticket for exciting spot prizes.
