The Linenhall, Castlebar, is set to host a unique celebration of Ukrainian culture this weekend as part of a special two-part workshop dedicated to the traditional art of Petrykivka painting.
Taking place on Saturday, February 28 and Saturday, March 7, the workshops will introduce participants to Petrykivka, a Ukrainian folk decorative art form recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Known for its flowing floral ornamentation, vivid colours and intricate brush techniques, Petrykivka painting has been passed down through generations of community practice in Ukraine. While floral motifs are central to the tradition, designs often feature birds, animals, houses and imaginative folkloric elements, resulting in joyful, highly expressive compositions.

During the sessions, attendees will be guided step by step through traditional techniques, learning about the distinctive colour palettes and symbolic patterns that define the style. Participants will not only develop new creative skills but also gain insight into the cultural heritage and meaning behind the art form.
The workshop is suitable for beginners, and each three-hour session runs from 11 am to 2 pm.
