Dynamometer technology in action, as it tests the speed of the e-scooter
Mayo Roads Policing members were out in force in Castlebar and Ballina armed with new Dynamometer technology over the last couple of days.
Fixed charge penalty notices were issued to e-scooters who were driving on the footpath and exceeding the 20kph speed limit.
The crackdown follows comments earlier this month, by Fianna Fáil councillor Damien Ryan who told a Council meeting that “we need a policy on e-scooter because they are going to become an absolute blight on the streets around the county.”
The Ballinrobe-based councillor told the meeting called on An Garda Siochána to take action against 'reckless behaviour'.
An Garda Síochana also alerted e-scooter rivers that since 20th May 2024 e-scooter users must be 16 years or older, obey a speed limit of 20km/h, drive on the left -allowed in cycle lanes or bus lanes and on regional or national roads, have lights, a bell or audible warning device, reflectors, brakes and it must be kept in a roadworthy condition at all times, follow the same rules of the road that apply to cyclists, including traffic lights, road signs and all types of pedestrian crossings and obey signals given by a Garda or school warden.
