MOUNT St Michael were a class apart as the Claremorris school produced a brilliant performance to clinch the Connacht B title under the Connacht GAA Air Dome this afternoon.

The Mayo girls had ten unique scorers and were superior all over the pitch as they had twenty-five points to spare over their opponents.

The Claremorris school attacked doggedly, defended menacingly and shot 1-4 before Dunmore Community School got their first point from a free in the nineteenth minute.

Former Mayo Minor Bree Hession got Mount St Michael's only first-half goal and finished with 1-4 in total – but she was just one of several star performers for the Mayo side, who led 1-9 0-2 at half-time.

The Mayo girls added four more goals in the second half; one from the brilliant Ashleagh Sammon - who finished with 1-5 - and efforts from Caoilinn Walsh, Róisin Horkan and substitute Áine Lynn.

Indeed, you could have singled out most of the Mount St Michaels team, many of whom were drawn from the all-conquering Claremorris side that have won several underage titles in recent years.

Dunmore added 1-2 to their tally in the second half, with Lily Kearney landing a well-worked but ultimately futile goal midway through the second half.

As expected, Mount St Michael stormed home to a victory and announced themselves as serious contenders for an All-Ireland title.

A full report, plus reaction from Mount St Michael joint-manager Emma Galligan and centre-forward Bree Hession, will be carried in the next print edition of The Mayo News.
