THE woman who was killed in a road traffic collision outside Newport on Thursday evening has been named as Lizy Abraham Saju.
A native of India, Lizy Abraham Saju, was a rear seat passenger in a car which collided with a camper van on the N59 on the Mulranny side of Newport at around 4.30pm on Thursday. She was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was removed from the scene to the mortuary at Mayo University Hospital where a post-mortem took place.
The 63-year-old lived in Kill, Co Kildare and worked as a nurse employed by Allenfield Nursing Homes in Co Kildare and was with a group visiting Mayo when the incident occurred.
She was described as being dedicated to her profession as a nurse and this dedication was matched only by her love and devotion to her family. She was also described as a compassionate caregiver, known for her kindness, warmth, and the gentle care she provided to her patients and her loss is felt deeply by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
The two other occupants of the same vehicle, a male and a female, were brought to Mayo University Hospital for what are described as ‘serious injuries’. Four other occupants of the camper van were also taken to hospital and their injuries are described as ‘non – life threatening’.
Following the collision which occurred on the outskirts of the west Mayo town, diversions were put in place as Garda Forensic Collision Investigators conducted a technical examination of the scene.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area at the time of the incident, are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
