The Great Western Greenway has been named one of the best cycle routes in the UK and Ireland.

As summer kicks off, Big 7 Travel has released its top 20 ranking of the 'Best Cycle Routes in the UK and Ireland', chosen by cyclist enthusiasts from the UK and Ireland.

The Great Western Greenway narrowly missed out on the top ten, being ranked number eleven on the list.

The 30-mile trail was hailefd an ‘ideal option’ for beginner and intermediate cyclists on the hunt for stress-free vistas.

Big 7 Travel wrote: “Starting in the charming town of Westport, the route hugs the Atlantic Ocean, offering sweeping views over Clew Bay and its small islands, then traversing pretty villages like Newport and Mulrunny (don’t miss its old Irish goats).

“From here, it’s a glorious eight miles to Acaill Sound, famed for some of the country’s most dramatic coastal scenery. The route used to end here, but a brand-new 5km stretch now connects Achill Sound to the historic town of Cashel.”

Big 7 Travel invited some of the UK and Ireland's most passionate cyclists to select their favourite cycle routes, resulting in a diverse list that caters to riders of all levels.
