Claremorris native who played for Claremorris and Mayo GAA died following a battle with Motor Neurone Disease

The death has taken place of former Claremorris and Mayo GAA footballer, Ger Brady following a brave battle with Motor Neurone Disease.

The 44-year-old former GAA star passed away peacefully on Thursday in the Mayo Hospice in Castlebar.

Ger's diagnosis with the degenerative Motor Neurone Disease in August 2022 shocked the Claremorris and Mayo GAA community who rallied behind him and his wife Karen and new born son Dylan by launching the fundraising initiative, 'Together For Ger'.

The initiative was launched in February 2023 at half time of the Mayo V Kerry Allianz league game in Castlebar and within 72 hours it had raised €132,626.

Ger was one of the stars of the Mayo GAA underage scene in the late 1990s and wore the green and red at minor, U-21 and senior level. He made his Mayo debut against New York in 1999 and won a Connacht SFC medal later that summer.

A native of Murneen South, Barnacarroll, he gave his heart and soul playing for the Claremorris GAA club whose members were the first to rally behind Ger and his family.

Ger will be sadly missed by his loving wife Karen nee Bell and their son Dylan; his parents, Gerry and Margaret; mother-in-law, Ann; sisters, Elaine Forde, Tara Nally and Louise Grant; brothers-in-law, Richard, Colin, Keith, Tomas and Keith; sisters-in-law, Aisling, Aimee and Edel, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends.

Ger’s remains will repose at Gilligan’s Funeral Home, Market Square, Claremorris (F12YP74) from 5pm on Saturday, March 23 until 7pm. Remains will arrive at St Colman’s Church, Claremorris for Funeral Mass on Sunday, March 24 at 2pm with burial afterwards in St Colman’s Cemetery, Claremorris. Funeral mass will be live streamed on You Tube 'Claremorris Church Live'.
