MAYO has recorded the second-highest increase in burglaries of any county in Ireland.
According to data from PhoneWatch, burglaries in the Mayo garda division have risen by 22 percent in the county - just one percent less than Clare, which recorded a 23 percent hike.
This goes against the national trend, which saw burglaries decline by 8 percent overall across 26 counties.
A total of 169 burglaries were recorded in Mayo between Quarter 4 of 2022 and Quarter 3 of 2023.
Of the seven garda divisions that recorded increases, four were in the west of Ireland.
Burglaries in the Sligo/Leitrim garda division rose by 17 percent while Galway’s numbers rose marginally by one percent.
Gardaí are currently investigating three burglaries in Manulla and Belcarra which occurred within hours of each other last Friday.
According to An Garda Síochána reports, 26 percent of burglars enter homes through the back door, 24 percent via back windows and 8 percent through front windows, with one in five cases involving a burglar gaining access through an unsecure door or window.
