Castlebar voluntary groups busily preparing for Make Way Day

Councillor Ger Deere had the hedge clippers out preparing for Make Way Day in Castlebar this week

In preparation for the upcoming Make-Way Day which takes place on September 22, Councillor Ger Deere and members of Castlebar Tidy Towns group were busy this week clearing weeds and cutting back overhanging shrubbery along a section of footpath on the Newport Road in the county town.

Make-Way Day is a campaign aimed at bringing the disability and wider community together to consider the needs of people of all abilities in shared public spaces and Cllr Deere is very passionate about it.

"The initiative is led by the Disability Federation of Ireland and is a unique nationwide collaboration across voluntary and local government sectors, but most of all it is about people with disabilities. The top obstacles that stop people with disabilities are
cars parked on footpaths, bicycles illegally parked, bins left on footpaths, uneven footpaths, overhanging trees and hedges and Make Way Day will make everyone more aware of these challenges," he added.
