A Mayo school principal says the 61,736 students who received their Leaving Cert results across the country this morning overcame unprecedented challenges. Edmund Holmes, principal of Our Lady’s Secondary School in Belmullet said the young people’s hard work, resilience and dedication paid off when results were revealed online at 10am.

“When we consider the unprecedented challenges our students here in Our Lady’s and students across the country faced during the pandemic, and not having benefited from experiencing the junior cert exams, we’re especially delighted for all of the students and their parents.

“Judging by the deluge of phone calls and messages coming into the school here in Belmullet this morning, it’s obvious that there was huge excitement about the excellent Leaving Cert results achieved by our students this year.

“All their hard work and dedication over the past two years certainly paid off when the results were revealed online. Almost 20% of the group here in Our Lady’s achieved over 500 points and over 60% achieved over 400 points which is way above the national average. The Leaving Cert Applied Students also excelled well beyond the national trend in their courses with 66% of students gaining Distinction Grades,” Mr Holmes added.

The Irish Second-Level Students Union (ISSU) agreed with Holmes and said the resilience shown by the class of 2023 was hugely impressive.

Shari Irfan, Uachtarán of the ISSU said: “The achievements of  Leaving Certificate students was testament to their dedication and hard work and we have no doubt that they will continue to make positive contributions to our society. As we move forward, let us remember that these results are not just a reflection of academic excellence but also of their growth as individuals.”

Heather Doyle, ISSU Education Officer said: “The stressful journey of the leaving cert is finally coming to a close and massive congratulations for coming this far. It has been a particularly unique second-level experience with the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Geraldine O’Brien of the Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland (ASTI) also congratulated all students receiving their Leaving Cert results.

“Today is a day to celebrate the beginning of the next phase of your lives,” said Ms O’Brien. “The knowledge, skills and experience you have gained as a result of progressing from first year through to the Leaving Cert will serve you in many ways as you pursue your goals as a young adult.”

The ASTI President said every young person getting results today has their own unique combination of talents, interests, skills and learnings.

“Regardless of your results today, know that your future holds many opportunities. I urge you to take time to consider all of your options in the days and weeks ahead.”

Ms O’Brien said this year’s Leaving Cert students were significantly impacted by the pandemic. “This year’s Leaving Cert students experienced school closures, mask wearing in class, cold temperatures in schools, and they never got to sit their Junior Cycle exams.

“Fortunately, these students benefited from a return to normality, including the certainty of a fair and transparent Leaving Cert exams process. A key learning from the pandemic is that we must protect the integrity of the Leaving Cert. Any changes must be built upon fairness for students and trust in the system.”

She concluded by asking today’s Leaving Cert students to celebrate their results safely.

“Your teachers are very proud of each and every one of you today. I urge those of you celebrating to do so safely. I wish you every happiness and success over the coming weeks and in your future lives.”
