The Westport Relay for Life committee and team captains have presented a cheque for €50,835 to Irish Cancer Society.

The event, which came to the West Mayo town for the first time this year, raised vital funds for those suffering with cancer.

Relay For Life is a 24-hour event where local communities come together to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and support those facing cancer.

Hundreds of people walked and ran around Westport's Mall as part of the inaugural Westport Relay For Life when it took place back in May.

The weekend of May 18-19 has been set as the date for next year's event.

Westport Relay For Life Chairman Peter Flynn and his committee were bowled over by the generosity of everyone with people giving some much of their time and talents to support the event

"At the outset we had set a target of €20,000. To raise over  €50,000 in such a short-time frame demonstrates the amazing generosity of our entire community," he said.

"Everyone involved in the 24-hour event gave of their time for free so all monies raised go directly towards critical services like nights nurses, patient transportation and counselling services for people impacted by cancer. We are delighted to announce that we will host the event again next year, so just ten months to go!"
