"I think we'll win seats in Mayo" - Eamon Ryan

Green Party leader Minister Eamon Ryan says his party will win seats in Mayo

THE leader of the Green Party has predicted that his party will win seats in Mayo in the next local and general elections.

Minister Eamon Ryan told reporters in Ballina that the Greens would be running candidates in Mayo in the upcoming elections, adding: “I think we’ll win seats in Mayo.”

“There was a major study done on climate change recently and it showed there was no difference between rural and urban Ireland in wanting to address this issue,” added Minister Ryan.

“And we’re an all-island party. We’ve membership groups all over the country and I’m looking forward to coming back canvassing in Mayo.”

A recent Sunday Independent/Ireland Thinks poll found that 48 per cent of voters would exclude the Green Party entirely from their voting preferences at the next election – making them the least transfer friendly party in the state.

When this was put to Minister Ryan, he replied: “In pre-selections that hasn’t been borne out. Let’s see what happens in June of next year.”

Former Mayo Green Party Chairperson Liam Heffron declined to comment on whether he would be standing for the local elections when contacted by The Mayo News, stating that candidate selection was a matter for the party's Mayo branch.

"While Mayo (and North Mayo in particular) desperately needs new political leadership, I also believe that the national Green party needs elected representatives from the West of Ireland in the party to loudly advocate for sensible and community-focused economic and social policies which affect the region," Mr Heffron told The Mayo News.

"Along with Minister Ryan I encourage all so-minded people to consider putting their own names forward to represent the Green Party in the next elections."

Achill native Saoirse McHugh previously stood for the Green Party in general and European elections but failed to get elected on both occasions.

She was eliminated from the 2020 general election on the fifth count after receiving a total of 6,036 votes.

Ms McHugh left the Green Party in 2020 after they entered coalition with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.

It is understood that she is no longer involved with any political party.
