Long-serving Fíanna Fáíl politician, Al McDonnell, was elected Cathaoirleach of Castlebar Municipal District this evening. He replaced Michael Kilcoyne, who was lauded by all sides for his “fair” and “balanced” handling of the post over the past 12 months.
Councillor Martin McLoughlin paid tribute to the outgoing cathaoirleach and said although it was Kilcoyne’s fourth occasion in the role in the past ten years he was getting better all the time. “You’re like fine wine - improving with the passing of time.”
Cllr Kilcoyne thanked his fellow councillors and the council officials for their untiring work in the past year and wished his colleagues well in next June’s local government elections.
Nominations for his replacement were then called for and McDonnell was the only name put forward. Cllr Blackie Gavin said it was an honour to nominate his Fíanna Fáil colleague for the position. “Al is one of the most experienced councillors in the country having served his community with great passion and dedication for 36 years. His advice and assistance is second to none.”
The proposal was seconded by Cllr Martin McLoughlin who said McDonnell was a huge asset to fellow politicians and council officials. “Al is the longest serving councillor in Mayo and has served the people with distinction. He has enormous insight and knowledge of planning and when we needed advice on the recent County Development Plan his wisdom was invaluable.”
As there were no further nominations, Cllr McDonnell was deemed elected.
The Moorehall native was then presented with his chain of office and said he was humbled by the trust shown in him by his fellow councillors. “It is a great honour to replace Michael Kilcoyne who did a wonderful job as cathaoirleach. He lifted the profile of the office and conducted things in a very fair manner with style and panache.”
Nominations were then sought for the position of leas-cathaoirleach and Cllr Gavin who had filled the position for the previous 12 months was elected unopposed. He was proposed by Cllr Kilcoyne and seconded by Cllr McLaughlin before promising to give the role unstinting dedication.
“The Cathaoirleach has no need to worry. If I’m needed I’ll be available 24/7 make no mistake about that.”
