Council to provide site for skate park
Edwin McGreal
Ollies, kickflips and hippie jumps could well be some of the most desirable moves for young people in Castlebar if plans for a skate park in the town come to fruition. Castlebar Town Council last week passed a motion which called on them to provide a site for a skate park in the town and fundraising efforts are now expected to kick on for the cost of the specalised ground itself. A Facebook group and online petition has already been set up in favour of a skate park in the town and a group of people involved in the proposal attended last Thursday night’s meeting of the council. Local man, John Faherty, addressed the meeting and said the plan was to develop a site for use of BMX, skateboarding and rollerblading, at beginners, intermediate and advanced levels. “We need a site and we will look at funding sources after this. If we get a site free of charge, it will cost us between €200,000 and €250,000 to build the facility.” The motion, varieties of which were proposed by Cllrs Therese Ruane and Harry Barrett, was passed, with the suggestion that the skate park be developed on council ground close to the new Tennis Club at Lough Lannagh. The skate park lobby group were told to form a committee and examine what fundraising plans they could come up with.
