Mayo News scoops Community Games awards for coverage

The Mayo News was honoured on the double at the HSE Community Games Media Awards last Saturday in the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone.
The Mayo News was one of eight regional newspapers recognised for the coverage afforded to Community Games throughout 2010, and also received the overall photographic award.
Mayo News sports reporter Daniel Carey paid tribute to the Mayo Community Games executive, particularly PRO Michael Brophy – ‘a mine of information on all things related to Community Games’ – and to Antoinette Meehan, who did Trojan work in keeping track of every reference to Community Games in the newspaper throughout the last year – a figure which exceeded 80.
He also thanked Mayo News designer Keith Reilly, who was responsible for sourcing all the material included in the newspaper’s submission and designed many of the pages contained therein. Finally, he highlighted the work of Ann Hennessy, an Athlone-based photographer who took some fantastic action pictures at the Community Games national finals.
Mid West Radio took the overall award in the radio category, and presenter Dave Cawley paid tribute to the work done by Michael Brophy and sports editor Angelina Nugent. Michael Brophy was also separately honoured for his work with Mayo Community Games.
