HUNDREDS of teenagers from Mayo and beyond flocked to Lacken Strand in north Mayo recently for the successful running of the second Band on the Strand concert.
The unique concert on Lacken Strand was organised by Lacken Foróige Club in conjunction with Mayo Foróige and Transmitter and J90 headlined with local band The Altar Boys playing support.
In excess of 600 teenagers, mainly from Mayo but also from counties Roscommon, Sligo, Offaly and Westmeath travelled to the idyllic setting on the western edge of Killala Bay and Regional Youth Officer for Mayo Foróige Andy Neary was delighted with how the event ran.
“It was an outstanding success,” he told The Mayo News. “With gatherings like this there is always the worry of alcohol problems and fighting but thankfully there was no trouble at all. All the Foróige leaders ensured this and we also got great weather, the rain didn’t arrive until 2am when we were getting ready to leave.”
Mayo Foróige consists of 45 clubs in every corner of the county with Lacken Foróige Club taking charge of this particular event. The logistics of hosting such a concert were considerable. Along with safety fencing and a stage, amusements and food stands were provided, meaning a significant amount of work was re-quired.
“Lacken Foróige were tremendous in taking on for the second year such a big event and they worked wonders. People from other clubs in the county were great too, sharing the workload and it all resulted in a great night for the Foróige members and the more opportunity we get to have events like this for Under 18s, the better,” concluded Neary.
