Breaffy parents ‘reassured’ about swine flu case

PARENTS of children in Breaffy National School near Castlebar felt ‘reassured’ this evening about swine flu fears after a meeting with Public Health officials at the school. A first class student of the school was confirmed this morning as having swine flu, the first reported case in Mayo. Parents of children in that class were given anti-viral medication and told to keep their children away from school and public gatherings such as birthday parties or football matches for the next seven days. With Breaffy NS due to close for the summer next Thursday, it means early summer holidays for 28 pupils. Parents of children in other classes were told that their children can return to school on Monday. Many parents had withdrawn their children from the school on receipt of a text message from the school about the case this morning. After the meeting parents confirmed to The Mayo News that they were ‘happy’ and ‘relieved’ with the reassurances given at the meeting, after initial worries this morning. The first class student, a girl, is recovering at home today after fears of swine flu first became apparent yesterday (Thursday). It is believed that she contracted the disease from a relation visiting from the United States.
