EXACTLY 35 years to the day since graduating from the Garda training college in Templemore, Westport-based Superintendent Pat Doyle will retire from the force on May 15.
A native of Bagenalstown in Co Carlow, Supt Doyle has been stationed in Westport as the superintendent for the area since 1998, having served as superintendent for two years previously in the Garda training college in Templemore. He had previously served in Mayo as an inspector, having earlier been sergeant in charge in Waterford City.
When Supt Doyle first came to Westport, he replaced Supt Frank Gunter who was one of a number of short-term appointments made to the Westport area. During his time in Westport, Supt Doyle became a well-respected figure in the community and his service to the town was praised this week by Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council, Cllr Martin Keane, who said he would be greatly missed in the town.
“As Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council, I would like to pay a very special tribute to Supt Doyle for all he has done for society and the community during his time in Westport. On a personal note, Supt Doyle drew up the system which allowed for the granting of a special permit for the collection of money for the elderly in relation to the Christmas fuel appeal. I appreciate all he did for that. He was very sympathetic and listened to what you had to say. If people were genuine with him, he was genuine with them and I know he will be sorely missed in Westport, and I wish him all the best in his retirement,” said Cllr Keane.
A retirement function for Supt Doyle will be held in the Knockranny House Hotel on May 15.
