Major regeneration plans for Bower’s Walk get go-ahead

MAJOR regeneration work for the Bower’s Walk area of Ballinrobe looks set to move forward after the plans were given the go-ahead last week.
A range of changes that will completely revamp the walkway, include repair to metal work railings and mooring points, the installation of an information board, removal of graffiti, resurfacing of paths and reinstating stone work, have been announced.
At the monthly meeting of Ballinrobe Electoral Area last week, the councillors agreed to formally adopt plans for the phased project and they were eager to get the project up and running immediately.
Cllr Damien Ryan said the regeneration of the walkway will be an ‘excellent facility for the town’.
“The walkway has fallen into disrepair and there are problems with anti-social behaviour. The development will be a massive facility for Ballinrobe. I hope work on the project will get under way as soon as possible and it will be reinstated better than it was,” said Cllr Ryan.
A total of €195,000 was provided for the project from the Social and Economic Fund in 2006.
“We’ve noted the people’s concerns for the development and money was made available. The next thing is that work starts as soon as possible,” said Cllr Patsy O’Brien.
Cllr Harry Walsh said he had some qualms about the project, however. “It was built as a dedicated walkway which was unusual for those times. Providing seating for it will no doubt be a daytime asset but it is the nocturnal aspects I am concerned about,” said Cllr Walsh.
Director of Service Seamus Granahan said that an application for funding has already been made to Fáilte Ireland.
The development will consist of improvements to Bower’s Walk from the weir and footbridge adjacent to Kenny’s Mill Complex to the existing walkway south of the pumphouse and north of the military barracks.
Improvements will also be carried out along Brewery Lane to access the walkway along the river.
